Economic Development

The City of Clute collects the 4B Sales tax for economic development.  The City has formed the Clute Economic Dvelopment Corporation to oversee the expenditure of these taxes according to State Law and the Ordinance that was approved by the vote of the Citizens of Clute that authorized the tax for economic development.  The City Manager currently fills the position of the Executive Director of the Clute EDC.

The Clute EDC recently funded a sales tax study that shows what types of businesses would prosper in our City, and the types of businesses that are collecting the sales tax for the City of Clute.  One example is the fact that in 2007 there are $24,513,869 in sales in local restaurants, but only $9,766,421 of that came from local residents.  The remaining $14,747,448 came from visitors, workers from the adjoining industrial plants, and residents of the adjoining communities.

The implication from those numbers is that there is a very good market for restaurant development in Clute because it is where people go for dining out.  Not shown in the sales tax study is that there are eight motels in Clute, two additional new hotels nearing completion, and one additional hotel beginning construction.  Nine of these eleven hotels are along Texas Highway 332, close to the Industrial District, with no restaurant within walking distance.  There is land available for restaurant and/or hotel development in the heart of our Hotel District.
